In December 2021, the number of electric vehicle registrations reached 50,000 for the first time, according to a JMK Research and Analytics report.
It claims that the overall number of electric vehicles sold in December 2021 was 50,866, a 240% growth over the number sold in December 2020.
Uttar Pradesh has the highest monthly registered EV sales among all states and UTs, clocking over 10,000 EV sales in December 2021, making it the first state to achieve that. At 13%, Maharashtra ranks second, followed by Karnataka (9%), Rajasthan (8%), Delhi (7%), and Tamil Nadu (7%).
Electric two-wheelers and passenger-type electric three-wheelers made up 90.3% of all EV registrations in December 2021. After these categories, e-cars (5%) and cargo three-wheeled electric vehicles (4.3%) are the next-largest categories.
A higher awareness of vehicular emissions and their contribution to global warming, an increase in preference for personal mobility, the availability of a variety of EV policies that encourage green mobility, and a significant reduction in the price gap between electric and gasoline vehicles, are some of the factors contributing to this effect.
The overall electric two-wheeler sales in the country in December 2021 stood at 24,725 units. Registrations increased by 10% m-o-m and by 444% y-o-y. In December 2021, 94% of all registrations came from the Top 10 players. After a gap of around 7 months, Okinawa regained the lead over Hero Electric.
The sales of registered three-wheelers (both passenger and cargo-type) in December 2021 stood at 23,373 units, signifying a 29.8% m-o-m increase. Passenger E3W sales increased by 30% m-o-m whereas cargo E3W sales increased by 33% as from the previous month’s sales.
The report shows that e-car registrations in December 2021 totaled 2,522 units, an increase of 64% from the previous month and an increase of 410% from the previous year. Tata Motors dominated this month’s e-car registrations, accounting for 93% of the total registrations in December 2021.
In December 2021, electric buses (e-buses) sold 221 units, an increase of 550% month over month. According to PMI Electro’s December 2021 sales statistics, its share of total e-bus sales was 47.1%, followed by Olectra Greentech (26.7%), Ashok Leyland (13%) and JBM Auto (9.5%).
